The Government supports and facilitates the implementation of various short- and medium-term initiatives put forward and carried out by the community to provide transitional housing for alleviating the hardship faced by families awaiting Public Rental Housing and other inadequately housed households. Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) and the Welfare Council have joined hands to develop a large-scale transitional social housing project, United Court, in Tung Tau, Yuen Long. Upon completion in 2022, the project will provide about 1,800 units for underprivileged families. Social services will also be provided for the residents to promote active community participation and a caring supportive and inclusive social environment.
Spanning a site area of 250,000 sq ft at Shan Pui Road, the United Court is adjacent to the local village Shan Pui Tsuen and only a 10 minutes’ walk from the Yuen Long station of the West Rail Line. Comprehensive community facilities are available in the vicinity. The project will provide housing units for 1 or 2 persons, 3 persons, and 4 to 5 persons. A convenience store, a shared goods library, a communal kitchen, a health centre, an integrated social service centre and a vocational support centre will be in place to meet the everyday needs of residents and create diverse community engagement opportunities.
The Welfare Council is responsible for project planning, construction, operation and management, and for providing residents with a variety of people-oriented community services. SHKP has provided the land lot with a lease of 8 years minimum as well as full support from preliminary project planning, basic site formation to property management consultancy when the project comes into operation.
