Sustainable Development

At Arup, the company identify sustainability as a driver in everything that they do, seeking to minimise environmental impact, maximise economic and social benefits, and optimise efficient consumption of natural resources. To us, sustainable development is fundamentally about creating a balance between the needs of a growing world population and the finite resources and health of our planet – our life support system.

Guiding their efforts in this field are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals which define what better looks like in 2030 and beyond. They provide the team with a lens through which they can challenge, frame, refine and expand the impact of their work. Taking a proactive, holistic approach to integrating sustainability into their business has enabled them to identify opportunities for growth and innovation, creating both tangible and intangible value for their clients, entire communities and the planet.

Total Design

Arup draws upon skills and capabilities from diverse disciplines to seek ever better
ways to imagine, design and shape a better built environment.

Engineering is central to human progress and their founder, Sir Ove Arup, was an extraordinary engineer who was deeply concerned with that progress. His vision for the role of engineering in design and of design in engineering was shaped by humanistic, rather than simply technical principles.

This breadth of vision has inspired generations to pursue the art and science of Total Design in their firm. The purpose of the firm founded by Ove has remained constant over the ensuing70 years. Today, by uniting design, engineering and technology under the ‘Total Design’ philosophy, they continue to shape a better world.

Digital

Arup is on a mission to shape a better world by creating greater value for their clients and pursuing sustainable development. Data and digital play a vital role in realising our ambition.

They automate their processes to provide better services and deliver better outcomes for their clients. By combining their traditional skill set with newer skills in data, modelling, products and emerging technologies, they innovate new and exciting digital services that help their clients tackle more complex issues and drive sustainable development.

Having the best digital tools is key to their success. They harness the best external software, where it is available, and develop their own digital tools to support their work, improve their processes and deliver new solutions for their clients.

Adopting MiC to Build Light Public Housing (LPH) to Expedite Housing Supply

The Policy Address 2022 announced the construction of LPH. The LPH Scheme is led by the Architectural Services Department with the adoption of MiC. The Housing Bureau has selected eight sites in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long, Ma On Shan, Kai Tak, Ngau Tau Kok and Chai Wai, providing around 30,000 LPH units. The construction period takes only one to two years. Each units equipped with self-contained toilet and basic facilities such as water heater and air-con. The first batch of around 2,100 units will be completed in 2024-25 and the remaining units will be completed by phases in 2025-26 and 2026-27, so as to shorten the waiting time of public housing.
