Q1. Must we seek in-principle acceptance (IPA) for the proposed MiC system and components first before we can adopt the system and components and proceed to the formal statutory plan submission?
A1.
No. There is no need for the Authorized Persons (APs) and Registered Structural Engineers (RSEs) to seek IPA for the proposed MiC system and components first. They can go direct to the formal statutory plan submission stage after they have established that MiC is suitable for the project and finalized the design of the building including the MiC parts for the project.
Q2. Is it necessary to appoint an AP and a RSE in preparing the application for IPA of a MiC system?
A2.
MiC suppliers and manufacturers are required to appoint an AP and a RSE (as necessary) in preparing the application for IPA of a MiC system.
A3.
Please refer to the BD’s website for the list: https://www.bd.gov.hk/en/resources/codes-and-references/modular-integrated-construction/index.html
A4.
An MiC system accepted by BD will be assigned a unique reference number which should be quoted in the formal plan submissions. To cater for advancements in construction technology and possible revision to the Codes of Practice, the IPA of any MiC system will be subject to a validity period of 5 years maximum. Upon expiry, an application for renewal of the IPA prepared by an AP and a RSE (as necessary) should be made in standard form in compliance with the latest requirements of the BO.
A5.
If sufficient information is provided in the application, BD will provide a determination in the form of a "letter of in-principle acceptance" normally within 45 days. The application may be declined if there is insufficient information or there are contraventions to the provisions of the BO and its subsidiary regulations.
